Background Checks passed the House!

Yesterday was a historic day in Congress. For the time in 25 years, the House of Representatives stood up to the NRA to pass substantial gun-safety legislation.

The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 is an important first step toward creating safer communities for our families and neighbors. It will ensure that virtually every transfer of a firearm in this country is accompanied by a criminal background check. If signed into law, this bill would save lives.

But, I know today’s success will not stop the tireless work of millions of dedicated parents and leaders across this country. There is so much more to do if we’re going to stop the loss of 40,000 lives a year to gun violence.

The first thing we must do is pass this universal background check bill through the Senate. With 97% of Americans supporting background checks, we know we have the popular support. Connecticut’s Senators, Dick Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, have been fierce leaders in this area, but if you live in a different state, or have family or friends across the country, reach out to Senators who may be on the fence and tell them to do their jobs by passing universal background checks.

We couldn't have passed this bill in the House without your support and your tireless efforts to get this new Democratic majority elected. This is just the beginning for us.

Thank you.
