What you need to do now.

Every day for the last year and a half, I've heard the same question from thousands of you who are terrified by our country's direction: WHAT. CAN. I. DO?

How after all, should decent Americans respond to the roiling dumpster fire of self-obsession and vulgarity who happens to be their president? Very little seems adequate to the task.

I'm not sure I've answered that question adequately enough. Right now, that changes. When the sun rises tomorrow, there will be exactly 100 days until Election Day.

Here's what you can do to make a difference:

Most importantly, candidates need your help. Throughout Connecticut and around the country, there is a truly amazing array of candidates working around the clock. They need your time, treasure and talent. Pick one or pick ten, and make them your hobby. Your efforts will make the difference. To volunteer at events this weekend near you in Connecticut, visit the Fight Back CT map. To help nationally, use these resources to make a difference through the DCCC here and SwingLeft, and to help in the Senate click here.

Tell your friends and family why you are volunteering, get them involved and encourage them to vote. Enthusiasm is infectious and politics is ultimately about numbers. It's their future and their country too.

Stand together. The Democratic Party is wonderfully diverse and covers a huge swath of the political spectrum. We have our disagreements, but the fundamental notions of justice, equality, freedom and respect that bind us are more powerful. Once into the breach, we must fight side by side unconditionally and without reservation.

Our mission is clear. Win back power. Make Congress an effective check to the president. Bring back sanity to Washington and the rest of the nation.

Marches, protests and activism saved the Affordable Care Act, reunited immigrant families who were torn apart at the border and constrained President Trump's most authoritarian daydreams.

You did those things. That's the power you have. That's the difference you have made so far.

In 100 days, the president, the Republicans and the world need to see that the American people, from coast to coast and at every level, reject the hateful authoritarianism of Donald Trump. In our democracy, nothing wins an argument like an electoral rout. That is what we need.

It's go time, and we unite, fight and win, or we continue to live with the consequences of unchecked Trumpism. And for the sake of our country and our children, that is not an option.

Thanks,

Jim
