[Petition] We MUST address gun violence in school

Gun violence is a national crisis and we have got to do something about it. Now.

That's why it's so maddening that Donald Trump's Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos, has announced that the administration's commission on school safety won't look at guns.

From Columbine to Sandy Hook to Parkland, the one common thread in these tragedies has been guns.

Solving the problem and making our communities safer requires political will. The will to change laws concerning access to assault weapons, background checks, mental health care access, and more.

Add your name now to tell Betsy DeVos to take school shootings seriously.

DeVos and the Trump administration are counting on us not noticing their glaring omission. They're counting on people being distracted at this crucial time.

Well, we're not.

Recently, I introduced the SAFETY Act bill. (SAFETY: Start Advancing Firearms Enhancements and Technology). The bill provides incentives for manufacturers and consumers that promote smart-gun technology such as fingerprint locks and radio-frequency ID.

Saving lives is my top priority. Smart-gun technology would prevent the kinds of accidental deaths that happen every day: toddlers killed by separate gun accidents on the same day in Virginia: a two-year-old killed by his four-year-old brother, and another two-year-old killed while playing with a gun.

Students' lives are at risk, and the Trump administration refuses to acknowledge the hard facts. No child should fear for their life at school. Yet far too many Americans have experienced a school shooting.

While I work in Congress for commonsense reforms, add your name now to tell Secretary DeVos that there should be no school safety discussion without addressing gun violence.
