Abandoning Americans in need

The Trump administration has failed our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico. Contrary to the "official" report that only 64 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine puts that number closer to 5,000.

After one of the most devastating hurricanes in U.S. history, hospitals and doctors could not provide adequate medical care. Patients were unable to travel to their medical appointments. The vast majority of households had no electricity for months on end. Clean water was unavailable.

And what was the response from the White House? Inadequate preparation. Meager support. Pointing fingers while leaving the poor people of Puerto Rico to die.

Turning our backs on Americans in need is a shameful response to any natural disaster.

The people of Puerto Rico are suffering thanks to this administration's failure to focus, solve problems, and do anything more than pander to Donald Trump's base.

Congress needs to step up now and demand that our fellow citizens get the help they need.
